THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 5. The Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association will procure essential items from neighbouring States and distribute it to the hotels if the traders, who are on the warpath in the State against the introduction of Value-Added Tax (VAT), do not bring stocks. The president of the Association, N.B. Krishna Kurup, wanted temporary registration and permit to be given to them for the purpose during the discussions he held with the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy and the Finance Minister, Vakkom Purushothaman.
Plea to reduce tax
He urged the Government to reduce the tax in star and bar hotels which had gone up to 12.5 per cent following the implementation of VAT to 4 per cent. Mr. Kurup took exception to the reported misbehaviour by the participants of the Secretariat siege organised by the traders towards women and elderly persons. He felt that they had brought discredit to the entire trading community through their behaviour.
