TDB refutes reports on tree felling

By Our special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM. APRIL 5. The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) has refuted reports to the effect that it is planning to cut down a large number of trees from the land belonging to it in different parts of the State.

The Secretary of the Board, V.S. Ramanujam, said in a rejoinder here today that on the contrary the decision was to make the tree conservation measures being implemented by it more effective. Steps would be taken to protect trees which were showing signs of decaying.

Trees which had fallen and which were in danger of falling would also be removed as part of it.

The official said that details like the types of trees, their number, age and size were necessary before embarking on such a venture. A survey was being conducted by the Board for the purpose.

He contended that the Board had always given priority to the protection of nature and afforestation. Deforestation was being kept at a minimum and trees were being protected while implementing schemes at Sabarimala and Pampa.

The same policy was being followed in the case of the other temples also. It was implementing a special scheme for protecting the sacred groves and planting trees and medicinal plants on vacant land. It was incurring an expenditure of Rs. 75 lakhs per annum for the conservation of flora and the temple ponds, he said.
