CPI seeks House panel probe

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 5. The CPI has demanded an inquiry by a Joint Legislature Committee (JLC) into the SSLC question paper leak.

The CPI legislature party leader, K. P. Rajendran, told a news conference here today that a probe by a House committee with representatives from all sides as its members was essential to go to the root of the SSLC question paper leak and to ensure that similar things did not happen in future. The Education Minister, E. T. Mohammed Basheer, should step down during the probe, he said.

Mr. Rajendran, accompanied by the party MLA, P. Narayanan, said the ongoing Crime Branch probe was unlikely to throw much light on the root causes of the question paper leak.

From the information available so far, it was clear that a massive racket was operating with close links to the Education Department. A mere Crime Branch investigation was unlikely to bring out all aspects of this racket, he said. The CPI leader said that there was the need to clear the misgivings of students and parents about the credibility of the SSLC examination.

The Government should clarify whether the examinations already held would remain valid and what steps it had taken to ensure that the rescheduled examinations would be conducted without any hitch, he said.

He also sought steps to prevent irregularities in the conduct of medical-engineering entrance examinations.
