2 held in Ashwini murder case

KANNUR APRIL 5. Two National Development Front (NDF) activists were arrested by the Crime Branch here today in connection with the murder of the Hindu Aikya Vedi leader T. Ashwini Kumar on March 10. The police identified the arrested as C.P. Ummar (25) of Shivapuram and B.M. Siraj (27) of Chavassery. They were arrested by the Crime Branch Dy.SP, M. Damodaran.

Chief of Air Staff to visit State

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM April 5. The Air Chief Marshal, S.P. Tyagi, Chief of the Air Staff, will arrive here on April 7 on a two-day official visit. Vandana Tyagi, president of the Air Force Wives Welfare Association, will accompany him. This is his first visit to the State capital after assuming charge as Chief of the Air Staff. Air Marshal S.Y. Savur, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Air Command, and Asha Savur will receive them at the Airport.

SLBC meeting today

The 86th meeting of the State-Level Bankers' Committee(SLBC) will be held at the Government Guest House, Thycaud, here tomorrow. B. Swaminathan, Executive Director, Canara Bank, will chair it. The Principal Secretaries and Secretaries of the State Government, top executives of the Reserve Bank of India, NABARD, scheduled commercial banks and top officials of departmental agencies will participate. The meeting will evaluate the performance of banks in the State vis-à-vis targets allocated to them under various Government-sponsored schemes and priority sector.

Recruitment of sub-inspectors

The Staff Selection Commission will be holding an examination for recruitment of sub-inspectors in BSF, CISF, ITBP and SSB on June 26. The scale of pay is Rs. 5,500-9,000 and there are 463 vacancies. Age limit as on January 1, 2005, should be between 20 and 25 years. Candidates should possess bachelor degree as on January 1, 2005. Possession of NCC `B' or `C' Certificate or outstanding sports/athletic certificate is desirable. Fee of Rs. 75 should be paid through CRFS stamp. No fee for SC/ST/ex-Servicemen. The examination centres in the State are Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Thrissur and Kozhikode. Applications should be sent before April 21 to the Regional Director (KKR), Staff Selection Commission, I floor, `E' Wing, Kendriya Sadan, Koramangala, Bangalore-560034.

National marine fisheries census

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHB), under the Union Ministry of Agriculture, has drawn up a scheme for strengthening the database and information networking for the fisheries sector. A national-level census on important attributes of marine fisheries has been approved for developing a national database. National Marine Fisheries Census - 2005 will be undertaken by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Kochi, and a premier research institute under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi.

New Drugs Controller

A. Abdul Shukoor, has taken charge as the Drugs Controller with effect from April 1. Mr. Shukoor was appointed to the post following the retirement of G. Sudha as Drugs Controller on March 30.

Mourning on Friday

The day of burial of the Pope John Paul II will also be a day of mourning in addition to April 3 and 4. According to an earlier announcement, the three-day mourning period was to be from April 3 to 5. The Revenue Minister, K.M. Mani, will represent Kerala at the funeral.

Building to be named after Pope

Thrissur April 5. A block of the new administrative wing of Jubilee Mission Medical College, run by the Thrissur Archdiocese, will be named after the Pope John Paul II. This was decided at a meeting of the Medical College Trust, presided over by the Archbishop Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy. The 90,000 sq ft administrative building is being constructed at a cost of Rs. 6 crores. A blood component separation unit at the medical college will also be named after the Pope.

KC (Jacob) leaders quit party

KOCHI APRIL 5. Close on the heels of Shibu Thekumpuram, the former general secretary of the Kerala Congress (Jacob), and some other office-bearers quitting the party, another group of office-bearers resigned from the party today. Among those who have resigned are the general secretary of the Kerala Trade Union Congress (KTUC), P.V. Gopalan; the Ernakulam district general secretary, A.V. Roy, the president of the party's Aluva unit, N.X. Joy, and the State committee member, Aji Menacheri.

CIAL-HUDCO talks fail

Nedumbassery APRIL 5. A meeting held at Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL), Nedumbassery, on allotting equity in the airport company to the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) failed to produce any result. The meeting failed as HUDCO, the major financier of the airport project, insisted on converting Rs. 52 crores outstanding against CIAL into its equity in the airport company. The CIAL expressed its desire to issue shares equivalent to Rs. 13 crores. But HUDCO stuck to its demand. The Union Minister in charge of Housing, Kumari Shelja, the Chairman and Managing Director of HUDCO, Rane, and the Airport Managing Director, V. J. Kurian, attended the meeting.

KOLLAM April 5. The Kollam diocese is organising a public meeting to condole the death of Pope John Paul-II at 4 p.m. on April 10. The meeting to be held at the Vady St. Antony's Church compound, will be addressed by leaders and religious heads. The meeting will be preceded by a Papal commemoration holy mass at the church with the Kollam Bishop, Stanley Roman, as the chief celebrant.

New building

At a function to be held here on April 6, the Health Minister, K.K. Ramachandran, will inaugurate the new building for the District Homeo Hospital. The hospital complex has been constructed at Thevally by the District panchayat. On the occasion the Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran, will inaugurate the administrative block of the hospital.

Contest

As part of the `Guru Varsham' celebrations, the Kollam unit of the Bharatiya Abhibhashaka Parishad will organise a paper presentation competition for the young lawyers of the State.

The topic for the competition is `Sree Narayana Guru's contributions towards social justice in Kerala.' Lawyers with experience up to three years and under 35 years of age can participate. The content, in Malayalam, should not exceed ten pages. All submissions, in triplicate, along with copies of the enrollment certificate should reach the Secretary, Bharatiya Abhibhashaka Parishad, Madhava Sadanam, Olayil, Kollam-691009 by May 5.

Pooram

The Minister for Tourism, K.C. Venugopal, will inaugurate the Kollam pooram at the Asramam Maidan here on April 15. The festival is being organised as part of the annual 10-day celebrations at the Asramam Sri Krishnaswamy Temple.

Seminar

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM April 5. A one-day seminar on `Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of tsunami victims' was conducted on Monday in association with Indian Habitat Forum (INHAF) and Habitat Technology Group, Thiruvananthapuram at Alapad panchayat.

Banks to disburse Rs.2,699 crores

THRISSUR APRIL 5. Banks in the district will disburse Rs. 2,699 crores as loan in the financial year 2005-2006. According to a release here today, the figure shows an increase of 24 per cent over the targets fixed for the just-concluded financial year. In this year's credit plan, the target fixed for the priority sector is Rs. 1,790 crores and for the non-priority sector, it is Rs. 909 crores. In the priority sector, the target for agriculture and allied activities is Rs. 774 crores, while for the SSI sector the figure is Rs. 219 crores. The plan has allocated Rs. 797 crores for other priority sector activities.
