VISAKHAPATNAM, APRIL 5. Several organisations and leaders paid rich tributes to the former Deputy Prime Minister, Babu Jagjivan Ram, on his 98th birth anniversary on Tuesday. The VUDA Chairman, P.S.N. Raju, who garlanded his statue near the Visakha Museum on Beach Road, described him as an ideal and inspiring leader who had sacrificed his life for the cause of the downtrodden and those suffering injustice. A function was organised at the Community Welfare Centre at the Steel Plant where the birth anniversary was celebrated as Samata Divas. The Director (personnel), K. Ayyappa Naidu, recalled his services to the nation as a parliamentarian for 36 years and the portfolios he had held in the Union Cabinet. The Deputy Chief Personnel Manager and SC/ST liaison officer, B. Naik, and the DGM (corporate planning and coordination), T.K. Chand, participated. At Andhra University, the former DIG of Police, K. Rushya Rao, described Jagjivam Ram as a visionary and recalled his contribution to the implementation of reservations. The BJP city president, B. Rangamohana Rao, and the Lok Sabha constituency conveneor, T. Subbarami Reddy, garlanded the leader's statue on Beach Road. Sarees were distributed to women by the Dalit Morcha.
