Small traders' woes

Sir, — As per the State Government's commercial tax rules, traders are renewing their TNGST licence every year on or before March 31. Small traders whose turnover is below 3 lakhs are exempted from submitting their accounts for verification.

The Commercial Tax Departments is not issuing receipts for demand drafts and cheques. So, fearing harassment the small traders are renewing their TNGST number by paying Rs.500 in cash. Every year the small traders are harassed with a demand for `mamool' of Rs.1000 or Rs.2000 depending on their capacity. Otherwise, they are threatened that their licence will not be renewed or that their premises will be raided. The small and gullible traders have no forum to express their grievances.

The Government must come out with a clear-cut procedure to weed out the unscrupulous elements and may collect a lump-sum renewal fee of Rs.5000 for 10 years.

It will mitigate the sufferings of the small traders.

Stumbling block

Sir, — One big rectangular structure raised up to two feet above ground level said to be housing telephone cables built by BSNL authorities just near their office premises on Birds Road in Tiruchi remains a stumbling block for all vehicular traffic. Motorists and even pedestrians fall down, tripping over this invisible structure at night. Hence, the BSNL authorities should find a place to accommodate the structure on their premises without encroaching upon the road.

Spare varsities

Sir, — Some years ago, there was only one Tamil University, but today all universities in Tamil Nadu have become Tamil Universities.

The Tamil linguistic agitators should know that a university attracts students from distant places to undergo specialised courses. Distance education and

outstation students from other States are forced to speak in Tamil on the campus.

The compulsory use of Tamil in name-boards makes it more difficult for them.

A new column has been created in convocation /provisional application forms, asking the students to write their father's name also in Tamil.

The Tamil linguistic leaders should not press for Tamil as a language of communication at the university-level. This only leads to universities resembling local colleges.

Moreover, the universities should desist from using Tamil in degree certificates.

In the interest of outstation students, the Tamil linguistic agitators should leave university and higher educational institutions alone.

Unpleasant experience

Sir, — Recently, I visited a popular departmental store in Tiruchi. When I went there, unfortunately power went off and all customers had to suffocate because of the congestion as the main gate was closed. Instead of satisfying the customers, the staff were not giving proper reply.

Also the SBI-VISA card, which was normally accepted by them earlier, was not accepted on that day and the reply given by the staff was not satisfactory.

This has put the customers to much hardship and many were found running here and there in search of the ATM nearby.

This is not expected from a popular store. I hope that this will not be repeated in future.

Post box

Sir, — There is one street post-box on Pensioners Street at Tennur in Tiruchi. There is only one slit denoting the time of clearance of letters as 4-20 p m.

When I enquired about the time of clearance, I was informed that the letters are cleared twice, one at 12-50 p m and the other at 4-20 p m.

It is presumed that the still denoting the time of clearance 12-50 p m. has been removed by some mischievous persons.

The postman who clears the letters has not taken pains to report this to his department for replacement.

It is high time to relocate the box to the most prominent place, preferably on Bird Street opposite to the durga.

Cinema and culture

Sir, — Recently I watched a movie which said that it was a real story and showed some school going girl in love.

These days the themes of movies revolve around Plus-One and Plus-Two girls.

In the past, the focus was on college students.

Everyone seems to be oblivious of the damage that such films are doing to the society.

Therefore, the Government must safeguard our dignity in films.

Bus to Tirupati

Sir, — The State Transport Corporation's daily bus service from Kumbakonam to Tirupati, which was useful to the public, has been terminated by the Corporation suddenly.

Because of this withdrawal of service, the people suffer a lot. Hence, I request the authorities to resume the service at once for the benefit of the people.

R. Jayasankar,

Kumbakonam.
