THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 5. The CPI council party in the City Corporation Council today urged the Chief Minister to take urgent steps to check encroachments into the Amayizhanjan canal and stop unscientific construction activities which had contributed to the flooding of the city in the heavy rains on Monday night. In a pressnote issued here today, the council party secretary, Kadakampally Mohanan, said land sharks had encroached into the canal and reclaimed large portions, hindering drainage. He said the Parvathy Puthanar canal was also blocked by waterweeds and solid waste. Mr. Mohanan said the spate of construction activities by different agencies like the Kerala Water Authority and the Public Works Department had left large areas marked by ditches and trenches, disrupting traffic. He warned that the city would have to face heavy flooding during the monsoon season. Mr. Mohanan said the heavy rain on Monday had damaged 200 houses in the coastal village of Poonthura.
