THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 5. The Minister for Tourism and Devaswom, K.C. Venugopal, said here today that the Nishagandhi Festival would be held here from April 6 to 13. The highlights of the festival would be classical dance and music, folk dances, crafts bazaar and an ethnic plant and flower show. Jammu and Kashmir would be the partner State for this year's festival. There would be performances by dancers and singers from Jammu and Kashmir on every day of the Festival from 8 p.m. The festival, he said, would be eco-friendly and plastic-free. The entry would be free. The inaugural function would mark a gazal concert by Hariharan. Kavalam Sreekumar, M. Jayachandran and Manjari would perform light and semi-classical music on April 7, which would be followed by a Mohiniyattom performance by Kapila and a contemporary dance by Samudra, Thiruvananthapuram. On the 8th, Pallavi Krishna would perform Mohiniyattam, which would be followed by a Kuchupudi by Natyacharya S. Krishnakumar. Percussion by Sivamani would be held on the next day. Enakshi Das and group would perform Odissi on April 10. This would be followed by an Innovative Dance by Sudarshan Chakraborthy of Saphire Creations. On the 11th, Maya Rao and group would perform Kathak. On the 12th, Chitra Visweswaran and group would perform Bharatanatyam. Violin Ensemble by Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan would be presented on the next day. Kerala folk arts like Chavittunadakam, Kummatty, Sinkari Melam, Kakkarisi Nadakam, Kayarupinni kali, Chendamelam (children), Sarppam Pattu and Kalamezhuthu , Pakshishastram, Kainottam and Street Circus would also be presented. There would also be a painting exhibition by Nemom Pushparaj. The items to be presented by the 30-member contingent of artistes from Jammu and Kashmir would include Rouf, Chakkri, Bhakh, Hafiz Nagma, Morni, Surma, Chatni Timbru Di, Marriage Dance and Jabro Dance.
Crafts show
The mega crafts show would feature items made by artisans from 14 States including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Goa, Pondicherry, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Orissa. There would be demonstration and sale of crafts like wood carving, stone carving, terracotta, embroidery, cane and bamboo, cocoon garland, Naraspur Lace, metal crafts, stone jewellery, batik paintings, mat weaving, wooden comb manufacturing, name-writing on rice, tribal Jewellery making and rose wood inlay work. . At the Kerala Flower Show, there would be hundreds of local flowers and plants exhibited. The exhibits would include hibiscus, rose, vanilla, agalonama, tropical palms, fruit plants, medicinal plants and jasmines. Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute and Kerala Agricultural University are participating in the Show. A Food Festival would be organised along with the cultural programmes. This would have the participation of 14 hotels. Kanakakunnu Palace and the Museum-Keltron Junction would be fully illuminated with special effects, creating a dream ambience.
