HC grants stay in Koya case

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, APRIL 6. A Division Bench of the Madras High Court today stayed all further proceedings on a civil suit seeking to permanently restrain the Secretary of the All India Chess Federation (AICF), P.T. Ummer Koya, from holding any post in the federation till he was absolved of all charges against him.

The Bench comprising Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice S.K. Krishnan granted interim stay, on an appeal by Mr. Koya against a March 17 order of a single judge granting leave for the chess associations of Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Maharashtra to file a civil suit against him in the Madras High Court.

In his affidavit, Mr. Koya said no civil suit in the matter could be either filed or heard here, and that the registration of the AICF done in Tamil Nadu in 1958 was not valid any more as the State had enacted a new Registration Act in 1975.
