Kodava hockey tournament

BANGALORE, APRIL 6. 222 teams... Limca Book of Records have taken note of them! That's how popular the Kodava inter-family hockey festival is getting to be.

The ninth edition of the Kodava Hockey Academy run annual inte-family hockey tournament for the Biddanda Cup 2005 is all set to get underway from April 15. The final is slated for May 5.

It has been the tradition to host the tournament near their respective `Aain Manne' or ancestral home. But this time, deviating from the tradition, the Biddanda family will be having the 21-day tourney at Mercara, wherein the two chieftains of the clan were buried.

Speaking at a press conference, Biddanda Duleep Nanjappa, a member of the organising committee said that "despite weaning away from the tradition... this edition of the hockey festival is expected to be unique with the opening and closing ceremonies heralding new colour and character".

The teams — 222 in all will be divided into four groups and the tournament will be played on a knock-out basis. Koothanda family has won four titles in the eight editions thus far. — Our Sports Reporter
