Faithful offer prayers for Pope

A group of children, with candles in their hand, offer prayers to mourn the death of Pope John Paul II at St. John's Cathedral in Thiruvalla on Wednesday.

PATHANAMTHITTA, APRIL 6. The Malankara Catholic Church, Roman Catholic Church and the Latin Catholic Church in Central Travancore have been conducting special prayers at various churches to mourn the death of Pope John Paul II.

The Bishop of the Thiruvalla diocese of Malankara Catholic Church, Isaac Mar Cleemis, has left for Rome to attend prayers as well as the funeral of the Pontiff, scheduled for Friday.

The Vicar General of the Church, Mon. Stephen Thottathil, assisted by the parish priest, Cherian Ramanalil, celebrated holy mass at St. John's Cathedral in Thiruvalla on Wednesday morning.

Procession today

Fr. Ramanalil said a procession from St. Joseph's Latin Catholic Church at Thukalasserry to St. John's Cathedral, Thiruvalla, to mourn the death of the Pontiff has been jointly organised by various churches on Thursday afternoon.

The service at St. Joseph's Church will be held as per Latin rites, Fr. Ramanalil said.

Faithful from different parishes in the dioceses of Thiruvalla, Vijayapuram, Kottayam and Changanasserry will participate in the procession, Fr. Ramanalil said.

The supreme head of the Malankara Mar Thoma Church, Philipose Mar Chrisostom, will inaugurate the public meeting to pay tributes to the Pope at St. John's Cathedral Church at 6 p.m.

The Vicar General, Stephen Thottathil, will preside over the meeting.

Elizabeth Mammen, MLA, Fr. Ignatius Thangalathil, Fr. Abraham Mulamoottil, Fr. Varghese Valikkattu, Fr. Cherian Ramanalil, the Thiruvalla municipal chairman, Koshy Thomas, and Mother Serena will address the meet.
