EZHIMALA, APRIL 6. Indian Naval Ship (INS) Zamorin was commissioned by the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, here today, marking Phase I of the Ezhimala Naval Academy project, which is expected to be completed in 2008. INS Zamorin would serve as a depot base for the naval academy, which is being developed here at an estimated cost of Rs. 500 crores. This base would initially support the construction of the academy and all aspects of its training and administrative functions. The Chief Minister said the commissioning of INS Zamorin marked the realisation of a dream of the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who had laid the foundation stone for the academy on January 17, 1987. The naval academy would give physical expression to the seafaring traditions of the region, he said. Dwelling on this tradition with reference to historical events during and after the landing of Vasco da Gama, Mr. Chandy said the State Government was committed to implementing all its pledges with regard to infrastructural facilities for the academy. He said the State Government had already spent Rs. 40 crores on the infrastructural facilities, including completion of five peripheral roads leading to the project site, construction of three bridges, provision of a dedicated 110 kV sub-station and provision of an emergency water supply and water treatment plant. Construction of two National Highway (NH) standard approach roads to link the project site to the NH 17 and completion of a weir and pipeline for supply of water from the Kariangote river were the two infrastructural works that remained to be completed, he said at a press briefing after the commissioning ceremony. Stating that the project would be a boon to the local economy, Mr. Chandy said the State Government considered the naval academy as a prestigious institution of the State. The proposed Kannur airport project that the Cabinet had okayed would be a boost to the naval academy project, he said.
Compensation package
The Chief Minister said the Government had decided to transfer Rs. 1 crore to the District Collector, as per the court order to give additional compensation for some of the families evacuated from the project site acquired by the State Government. Vice-Admiral S.C.S. Bangara, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, in his introductory address said the commissioning of INS Zamorin was a significant step in the progress of the academy project. The academy would provide commercial, social and educational support and job opportunities to the local youth, he said.
