KOZHIKODE, APRIL 6. The Managing Director, Kerala Livestock Development Board (KLDB), Ani S. Das, said a project for identification and selection of quality Malabari goats, the indigenous breed in its natural home track, was on in the State. The project is being implemented in two stages. The Malabri breed of goat is known for its quality meat, less fat, prolific breeding, and is ideally suited for the Kerala climate, he added. Eight grama panchayats in Kozhikode district and four in Kannur have been selected for identifying quality male Malabari bucks for cross breeding, the Deputy Manager, regional semen bank, (KLDB), Rajeev Shetty, said. The original pure Malabari goat can be traced to Thalasserry. However, due to improper breeding and management, the quality of the breed vanished.
