KARWAR, APRIL 7. National Maritime Day was celebrated at Karwar port on Tuesday without fanfare. Capt. R. Mohan, Director of Ports and Inland Water Transport, who presided over the function, said the port handled 25.19 lakh tonnes of cargo in 2004-05, showing an increase of 164 per cent compared to last year. While palm oil, furnace oil, rock phosphate, industrial salt, raw sugar and molasses are imported, iron ore, granite, alumina and maize are exported from the port, he said. He said 179 ships called on the port last year. While the State Government received direct revenue of Rs. 12 crores, an increase of 112 per cent over last year, the Customs and Excise Department received a revenue of Rs. 50 crores.
