Shimoga
By Our Special Correspondent
SHIMOGA, APRIL 7. Shimoga, which was once considered the gateway to Malnad and endowed with a salubrious climate, has of lately acquired the sobriquet of "tinder-box," thanks to the rising temperature in the city.
The fact that the temperature has hovered between 39
The city has not received any pre-monsoon showers so far.
It is surprising that Shimoga district, where Agumbe the Cherrapunjee of the South is located, should also be known for its high temperature.
Shimoga is also facing one of the worst water crises it has so far.
Developing new layouts on tank-beds, wanton axing of trees and an increase in the air and water pollution are said to be the main reasons for the water crisis gripping the city.
The felling of over 200 trees on both sides of the road from D.V.S. Circle to Engineering College on Navile Road to widen the stretch has come in for sharp criticism as it is being cited as one of the causes for the sudden rise in temperature in the city.
The depleting water level in the Tunga reservoir has forced the municipal authorities to supply water once in two days with effect from Tuesday. But it looks almost certain that the citizens are in for a greater shock as there is no guarantee that there will be no further reduction in the water supply till the onset of the monsoon.
