dated April 8, 1955: Eden is British PM

Sir Anthony Eden became Prime Minister of Britain on April 6, and as he stepped into Sir Winston Churchill's shoes, the nation prepared for the announcement of an early general election. The 57-year-old Foreign Secretary accepted Queen Elizabeth's invitation to head the Conservative Government in a 36-minute audience at the Buckingham Palace. The new Prime Minister stayed at his Foreign Office desk for only half an hour before going home to be greeted and congratulated by his wife, Clarissa.
