Commendable

Sir, — It is commendable that the Indian Government decided to go ahead with the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service in spite of the attack on the Tourist Reception Centre in Srinagar on Wednesday. Cancellation or postponement would have meant giving in to terror.

Anirudh Govind Rajan,
New Delhi

Sir, — The 19 passengers on the bus to Muzaffarabad deserve praise for braving the militants' threats. It is hoped the bus service will continue in the years to come.

Suhail Sabir,
Aligarh, U.P.

Sir, — The people of Srinagar and Muzaffarabad, torn and ravaged by war for almost six decades, have got a glimpse of hope at last. I recall H.W. Longfellow's words: "But noble souls, through dust and heat, rise from disaster and defeat the stronger."

Binu Daniel,
Madurai, T.N.

Sir, — The Government's decision to flag off the bus service as scheduled is the best answer to the militants. The passengers who did not succumb to the militants' threats too deserve praise.

Adil Nizam,
Dehra Dun

Sir, — Congratulations to both India and Pakistan for ensuring the safe journey of the passengers by putting extraordinary safety measures in place. The historic journey will send a strong message to the militants who are bent upon destroying the peace process.

Rameeza Rasheed,
Chennai

Sir, — Many passengers are crossing over to the other side after five decades. Only they can bring peace between the two nations.

Akshay Alagh,
Noida, U.P.

Sir, — It will be foolhardy to assume that the bus to Muzaffarabad will better our ties with Pakistan when militants continue to attack civilian and government establishments with impunity.

Terrorism should be crushed mercilessly before any peace initiatives are taken.

M.D. Ravikanth,
Kancheepuram, T.N.

Sir, — Unless Pakistan roots out the terrorist infrastructure on its soil and stops militants from infiltrating India, all peace efforts will be in vain. Let us not forget the Kargil war.

S. Parthasarathy,
Manama

Sir, — The attack should teach India a lesson — that General Musharraf will crack down only on those militants wanted by the U.S. to get dollars and fighter planes. He will do nothing to stop the militants operating against India.

B.V. Rao,
Bangalore

Sir, — If militants are so much against the bus service, how is it they have not struck on the other side of the border? Pakistan has been promoting the bus service with equal fervour. Is there anything more than what meets the eye? I think India should not take Pakistan on face value.

Madhu Singh,
Ambala, Haryana

Sir, — The attack is despicable and condemnable. It is good that the two countries have gone ahead with the inaugural run.

Though the bus ride is not more than a symbolic gesture, it has its own significance.

Yugal Joshi,
New Delhi

Sir, — The people of Pakistan and India should forge closer ties to defeat the ulterior motives of the militants. We can no longer tolerate such acts of dastardliness.

K.V. Parthasarathi,
Karimnagar, A.P.

Sir, — The attack on the Srinagar tourist reception centre is condemnable. The fact that militants gained entry into a heavily-guarded area causes concern.

V. Pandy,
Tuticorin, T.N.

Sir, — The attack is an act of desperation by elements keen on disrupting the ongoing peace process.

Ahmed Aslam,
Malappuram, Kerala

Sir, — Terrorism and peace making cannot go together. What was the hurry to start a bus service when terrorism is yet to be stamped out?

S. Jayachandran,
Chennai

Sir, — The attack is a reminder to the security establishment to remain vigilant.

Amitabh Rawat,
Ghaziabad, U.P.
