Journalism & ethics

Sir, — This refers to the editorial, "Undercover journalism and ethics" (April 6). In order to increase circulation or viewership, several players in the media sponsor an approach that has come to be known as "yellow journalism."

In the light of India TV's recent sting operation, it is time to think of media regulation. I agree that extraordinary circumstances need extraordinary means to uncover truth.

But these must be confined to the areas where a larger and collective interest is in danger.

Tarak Shah,
Ahmedabad

Sir, — I agree that undercover journalism should be socially purposeful. But if we were to give undue importance to ethics and invasion of privacy, we cannot ferret out information or bring it to light at all.

In cases involving corruption and wrongdoing, one has to follow the adage "it takes a thief to catch a thief."

Kothamangalam, T.N.
