115 students debarred

BANGALORE April 7. As many as 115 students were debarred on Thursday by the Department of Pre-University Education for alleged malpractice during the Social Studies paper of the second year PU examination in the State on Thursday. Of the debarred students, 51 were from Gulbarga, 22 from Bijapur, nine from Bidar, seven each from Gadag and Bagalkot, three each from Tumkur, Raichur, Kolar and Hassan, two from Belgaum and one each from Haveri, Chitradurga, Bellary, Bangalore South and Bangalore North, the PU Director, D.N. Nayak, said in a press release.

Exams conducted smoothly

BANGALORE April 7. After problems on Wednesday caused by delay in downloading question papers, the examinations of various medical departments conducted by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) were held smoothly on Thursday. Many examination centres of the university were unable to download the question papers on Wednesday, which delayed the start of the examination. At the Bangalore Medical College, the diploma examination in Ophthalmology was delayed by over three hours as the question paper could not be downloaded from the Internet. The question paper for the examination, which was scheduled to commence at 9 a.m., could only be downloaded at 12.40 p.m. As many as 100 students appeared for the examination at the centre. They were reportedly not allowed to go out during this period. The university said there were server problems and assured to take corrective measures. According to the online examination system devised by the RGUHS, question papers are put on the Internet half an hour before the commencement of examination. The centres take printouts and hand them over to candidates.

Meet on railway project

BIJAPUR APRIL 7. The Bijapur Broad-gauge Horata Samiti will organise a meeting of legislators and MPs here on Sunday to discuss ways of expediting the gauge conversion work between Bijapur and Gadag. The meeting is scheduled to be held at Hemareddy Mallamma Mangala Karyalaya at 11 a.m. The samiti has invited MPs, Ministers and legislators from Bijapur, Bagalkot, Gadag, Dharwad and Haveri districts. Ghanashyam Toshniwal and Vishwanath Bhavi, samiti president and secretary, respectively, appealed to the invitees to attend the meeting. The future of the project lies in the hands of public representatives, and it can be commissioned provided a concerted effort is made, they said. The Bijapur-Gadag section is part of the 300-km Sholapur (Hotgi)-Gadag line. The gauge conversion was completed up to Bijapur in 1998, but work on remaining stretch is delayed.

Group clash in Bidar village

Bidar April 7. Tension prevailed in Kurubakhelagi village in Bhalki taluk on Tuesday night when two groups fought over the election of the President and Vice-President of the gram panchayat. At least six people were injured in the incident and were treated in the district and taluk hospitals. Ten people were arrested. According to the police, supporters of Mallappa Kurubakhelagi and Anand Devappa, who have criminal records, clashed. Eyewitness accounts said the clash erupted when the groups tried to bring in party politics in the election to the panchayat president's post. The police intervened, villagers said. A van and two motorcycles were seized. The accused were produced before the magistrate and remanded in judicial custody till April 19. Police have formed two teams to arrest Mallappa Kurubakhelagi and Anand Devappa. A case has been registered at the Khatak Chincholi police station.

KPSC departmental exam

BANGALORE APRIL 7. The Karnataka Public Service Commission has invited applications for its departmental examinations to be held in May/June 2005. The last date for submitting applications is April 25. Details are available on the commission's website, http:/kpsc.kar.nic.in.

Applications invited for award

BANGALORE APRIL 7. Applications have been invited for national awards in the field of child welfare from institutions and individuals. The Union Government instituted the awards in 1979 to recognise voluntary efforts. Five awards comprising a cash prize of Rs. 3 lakhs each are given to institutions and three awards comprising a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh each and citations to individuals are presented. The committee constituted by the Government will recommend names to the Centre, says an official press release. Application forms can be obtained from the Deputy Director/Assistant Director of Women and Child Development in the districts. The completed applications in English (in duplicate) should be sent to the Deputy Director/Assistant Directors of Women and Child Development in the district concerned on or before May 10, the note said.

Contribution to relief fund

Bangalore April 7. Valtech, a global consulting corporation delivering advanced technology solutions, has contributed Rs. 35 lakhs towards the Prime Minister's Relief Fund for providing assistance to tsunami victims. B.V. Venkatesh, president and chief executive officer, Valtech-India, handed over the amount to the Chief Minister. N. Dharam Singh.

Two arrested on gambling charge

Raichur April 7. The Sindhanur police arrested Tikraj and Ameen and recovered Rs. 2,300 from them when they were allegedly gambling in Sindhanoor town on Wednesday. They have been remanded in judicial custody. The Sindhanoor Town Police have registered a case.

Compensation released

Bidar April 7. The Bidar Sahakari Sakkare Karakhane has provided financial assistance to the family of a child who died in a mishap at the government school on the factory campus last year.

The factory president, Ishwar Khandre, donated a cheque of Rs. 50,000 to Abdul Samad, a labourer at the factory. Mr. Samad's son, Abdul Raheem, a fifth standard student, died when a part of the ceiling of the school building collapsed on him in 2004. The vice-president Basavaraj Jabshetty, directors, office-bearers of the labour union and others were present.

Huts gutted

Raichur April 7. Four huts were destroyed in a fire in Gomarasi village of Sindhanoor taluk on Wednesday. Household articles, foodgrains and haystacks worth lakhs of rupees were destroyed. The Sindhanoor Town Police have registered a case.

Suicide

Raichur April 7. Gadeppa (23) reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide in Gunjalli village of Sindhanoor taluk on Wednesday. The Turvihal Police have registered a case.

Criticised

BHADRAVATI APRIL 7. H.B. Veerabasappa, Vice-President of the Bharatiya Janata Party district unit, has termed improper the decision of the State Government to release water from the Bhadra Reservoir into the Tungabhadra Dam.

He noted that at present, the water level stands at 137 ft in the reservoir. Even though there has been good rainfall, the water level has increased only by 14 ft. As the water crisis is likely to aggravate in summer, the Government should reconsider its decision on releasing water from the reservoir as it will also hit farmers in the Bhadra Achcut area, he said.

BHADRAVATI APRIL 7. Sri Akkamahadevi Balaga in Old Town here will celebrate Akkamahadevi Jayanti on April 24. Free mass marriage has been organised to mark the occasion.

MYSORE APRIL 7. Gyan Vani FM channel of the Karnataka State Open University will broadcast Chaitra Sangeetha, a 20-episode programme on Indian classical music. The programme will be broadcast every day at 9 p.m. from Saturday. The programme will be repeated next day at 9 a.m. It can be heard on 105.2 MHz on FM band.

Yoga camp

Eye camps

MYSORE APRIL 7. Lions Club of Mysore, South, has conducted 25 eye-screening camps in rural areas of Mandya district during the Lionistic year 2004-05. A press release said the camps were conducted in association with the Usha Kiran Charitable Trust and 4,738 patients were screened. As many as 418 patients underwent surgery for removal of cataract.

Change in office timings sought

BHADRAVATI APRIL 7. The Bhadravati Taluk State Government Employees' Association has urged the Government to change the working hours in government offices as in some north Karnataka districts in view of the rise in temperature in Shimoga district.

It has said that the offices can be kept open from 8 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.
