`Bangarappa is no threat to Congress'

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, APRIL 7. The President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, B. Janardhana Poojary, has again taken on S. Bangarappa, former Chief Minister and President of the Samajwadi Party State unit, saying he is of little significance for the Congress, which is a national party.

Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Poojary said the Congress will defeat Mr. Bangarappa if he contests the byelection to the Lok Sabha from Shimoga.

Mr. Poojary again entered the battle of "monkey business" with Mr. Bangarappa in retaliation for the latter calling him a Hanumantha who lacks sincerity.

He said Hanumantha destroyed Lanka with commitment and sincerity. But Mr. Bangarappa was a "monkey" who jumped from party to party without hard work or commitment to the people, Mr. Poojary said.

He said the Congress made Mr. Bangarappa Chief Minister and KPCC President and his son a Minister. What else does Mr. Bangarappa want, he wondered. "Mr. Bangarappa is hungry for power and his demands are unlimited," Mr. Poojary said.

Ruling out midterm Assembly polls, the KPCC chief said Mr. Bangarappa is eagerly awaiting the fall of the coalition. But the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, will not oblige him. Mr. Singh is an intelligent man and he knows the art of taking two ruling parties together, he said.

Directive to MLAs

Mr. Poojary told the Congress MLAs from Bangalore — K. Chandrashekar (Basavangudi) and M.L. Narendra Babu (Rajajinagar), who continue to be councillors — to give up one post.

He told presspersons today that it is not good for anyone in the party to be an elected member of two representative bodies. It is not in the interests of the people or the Congress. They should have resigned their seats in the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Council, he added.

However, the Chief Minister has told the MLAs that there is no need for them to resign from the BMP Council.
