`Promote institutional deliveries'

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, APRIL 7. The Minister for Health and Family Welfare, N. Cheluvarayaswamy, said here on Thursday institutional deliveries for the safety of the mother and child should be promoted as they are safer compared to those conducted at home.

He was speaking at a function to mark World Health Day organised by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) in collaboration with the International Union for Health Promotion and Education South-east Asia Regional Bureau at the Kendriya Sadan.

Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said awareness has to be created about the importance of healthcare for pregnant women.

He said people should be aware that they can donate blood once in three months and should voluntarily come forward to do so. Government hospitals are facing acute shortage of blood and blood donation camps should be organised regularly.

He lauded the efforts of the CPWD in organising a blood donation camp on the occasion of World Health Day. Around 1,000 Union Government employees including Central Reserve Police Force personnel, Border Security Force jawans and their friends and relatives participated in the blood donation camp.

The camp was held in association with Indian Red Cross Society, Kidwai Institute of Oncology and the National Institute for Mental Health and Neurosciences.
