BANGALORE, APRIL 7. The shortage of doctors and nurses in government hospitals and that of professors in medical colleges will be filled shortly, the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, said here today.

"The Government is looking into the issue. The vacancies will be filled soon," he said at a programme to celebrate World Health Day organised by the Department of Health and Family Welfare and the World Health Organisation. This year's theme is "Mother and child health."

Upgrading hospitals

Mr. Siddaramaiah said accurate diagnosis of illnesses is critical and can be achieved only if hospitals have specialist doctors and equipment. He stressed the need for upgrading district hospitals and providing CT (computed tomography) scan facility and X-ray machines. Mr. Siddaramaiah said the Health Department should focus on improving the health of pregnant women and bringing down the maternal mortality rate and the infant mortality rate.

Anaemia

He said more than 70 per cent of children in the State in the age group of six months to 35 months have anaemia.

Over 10 per cent of children are not immunised, he added.

The Health Minister, N. Cheluvarayaswamy, said there is a need to create more awareness on maintaining the heath of mothers and infants. Doctors should follow up on the mother's condition after delivery.

Over 500 students participated in an awareness rally from the Vidhana Soudha to Ravindra Kalakshetra.
