Pleasant change for urban children

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI, APRIL 7. Urban children, who have got themselves attuned to a highly mechanical life, breathed a whiff of fresh air on Thursday when they witnessed the sporting events of the countryside played as part of the State-level "Palleseemala Sampradaya Kreeda Sambaralu," currently on at the SV Arts College grounds here.

While many games were curiously watched by the boys and girls in the audience, as if for the first time, the names of some of them were literally Greek and Latin for most of them, as their childhood had been spent in the concrete jungle. On the other hand, the elders, reminiscing their past, lustily cheered the players from across the fence.

Meanwhile, the host, Chittoor district, was the first to open the account when V.Jyoti won the gold in Chukuchuku pulla.

The cultural evening too was a major hit among the audience. Adrenalin gushed when an exciting "Pulivesham" was performed by participants from Guntur, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts to the rhythmic beat of the drums that ensured edge-of-the-seat entertainment for the foot-tapping audience. Kolatalu was performed by players from as many as 11 districts. Gobbipatalu and Dappu Ata were also well received.

The results (first, second and third positions) are as follows.

Boys section: Puttanchendu - Warangal, Nellore and Prakasam; Betchalata - B.Nagendra (Kurnool), Ch.Santosh (Vizag) and V.Hemanth Sivakumar (Chittoor); Goleelu - S.Rajesh (Srikakulam), B.Suresh (Prakasam) and K.Srikanth (Ranga Reddy); Bongaralata: K.Venkanna (Nalgonda), B.Yadagiri (Nellore), Ch.Sampath (Khammam); Game of touch: G.Nagaiah (Prakasam), N.Ravi (Nellore) and T.Balakrishna (Guntur).
