Focus on water crisis at DRC meet

By Our Staff Reporter

CUDDAPAH, APRIL 7. The District Review Committee (DRC) meeting held here on Thursday unanimously resolved to urge the Government to sanction an additional Rs. 3 crores to mitigate drinking water scarcity. It was also resolved at the meeting to seek 200 watersheds for the district. Revival of Proddatur Milk Foods factory, sanction of Rs. 2.50 crores each to develop infrastructure in the naxal-affected Rayachoti and Lakkireddipalle constituencies, an army recruitment centre at Cuddapah, sanction of 25,000 tonnes of rice were mooted in other resolutions.

The meeting also proposed relocation of two Kasturba Balika Vidyalaya residential schools from Simhadripuram and B. Kodur to Pulivendula and Kasinayana mandals. Setting up of BC girls' hostels at Badvel and Penagalur and ST hostels at Pulivendula, Rajampet and Nandalur were also proposed.

Groundwater

Groundwater depleted and 148 habitations in 21 mandals were facing acute drinking water scarcity, the Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, said. He feared that 400 villages in the district could face steep groundwater depletion by June. Nearly 500 of the 2,500 protected water schemes could become defunct by June, if rainfall deficiency continued, he said.

Water was being transported to 71 villages and supplied from private borewells to 74 villages, he said. The earlier sanction of Rs. 2 crores for mitigating drinking water scarcity was insufficient, Mr. Ranjan stated.

The Rajya Sabha member, S. Ramamuni Reddy, the Mydukur MLA, D.L. Ravindra Reddy, and the Kamalapuram MLA, G. Veerasiva Reddy, said that overhead tanks built at various places were idle for want of pipelines and energisation.

Migration

The Rajya Sabha member, C. Ramachandraiah, said labourers migrated for want of work and wanted check on use of machinery while carrying out works under the National Food For Work Programme.

Of the 80,240 agricultural power connections, only 680 have to pay charges, the Transco SE, K. Rami Reddy. He assured the Cuddapah MP, Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy, of supplying power for two to three hours more to save sweet lime orchards.
