Anantapur
By Our Staff Reporter
ANANTAPUR, APRIL 7. The efforts of Anantapur MP, A. Venkatarami Reddy, to get pilot project on the revival of traditional water bodies for the district have bear the fruit with sanctioning of Rs. 13.77 crores for it. Initially the pilot project was proposed to be implemented only in five districts in the country. But, the demand for such a project had forced the Centre to select 16 districts. The district administration had sent proposals for restoration and renovation of traditional water bodies in the Chitravati, Penna and Papaghni river basins. After examining the proposals, the Centre had sanctioned Rs. 13.77 crores. When contacted, a district official stated that the administration had, in fact, sent two different proposals. The Rs. 20-crore proposal was sent initially. Later, another proposal was sent with Rs. 100 crores when it was learnt that the Centre was willing to give more funds. However, change of guard in the District Water Management Agency (DWMA) had put breaks on the pursuance of the second proposal, ultimately marring the chances of the district getting higher funds. Mahabubnagar district had been sanctioned Rs. 32.84 crores under the project.
