The beach kabaddi court on the Tungabhadra river bank at Kurnool.
KURNOOL, APRIL 7. The right bank of Tungabhadra river near rail bridge at Kurnool is getting spruced up for the mega sports event--First National Beach Kabaddi Championship for men and women. A total of 68 teams from 27 States and five Central Government departments are expected to take part in the tournament. The Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India nominated former Andhra Pradesh Minister, K.E. Prabhakar, the chairman of Beach Kabaddi committee, who is supervising the arrangements. The organisers had tough time creating an artificial beach on the river bank. The 1.25 acre plot was filled with 300 truck loads of sand to create the effect. The event lasting four days beginning April 9 is expected to cost Rs. 15 lakhs. Fifty workers from Chennai were drafted for constructing the make-shift gallery to accommodate 15,000 people. Six courts were prepared to conduct the games simultaneously. Unlike conventional kabaddi, beach kabaddi game is played between teams of five each. The duration of game is 30 minutes and no player goes out of the court when declared out.
