Chain-snatching gang busted

By Our Staff Reporter

GUNTUR, APRIL 7. The Guntur district police on Thursday busted a gang of chain snatchers, who were involved in 12 cases in Guntur and Krishna districts and recovered gold valued at Rs.2.5 lakhs.

The Superintendent of Police, Jitender, told reporters that the City Crime Station police had arrested seven members of the gang led by Katari Ravi Kumar, 20, and recovered 40 tolas of gold and two motor-cycles. A gang-sheet would be opened against all the seven members for keeping surveillance on their activity, he added.

The modus operandi of the gang was to steal a two-wheeler and snatch chains at lonely places or in a crowded market. Most of the gold ornaments were recovered in the same condition, he said.

The other members of the gang were: B. Danamraju, 22, T. Shyambabu, 20, Nerella Leelakrishna, 19, M. Veeraswami, 20, P. Pavan Kumar, 19, and M. Shnakar, 21. In the past also wherever there was surveillance such offences had come down and gangs had weakened, Mr. Jitender said.

Ravi Kumar allegedly stole a TVS Victor from Bharatpeta in Guntur while he was learning dance in an institute here and made friendship with other members of the gang. Ravi Kumar used to snatch the chains riding pillion in all the crimes.

The Special Crime party Head Constable, Prasad, and the Sub-Ispector, Nageswara Rao, did the entire groundwork that led to trapping of the gang members.
