Nagercoil
By Our Staff Reporter
NAGERCOIL, APRIL 7. Two councillors, Selvam (Congress) and Salman Raj (DMK) staged a walkout from the special municipal council meeting held here on Wednesday, in protest against levying water tax of Rs.50 for 70,000 connections in Nagercoil, in sharp contrast with the nominal Rs.5 collected in Kanyakumari, Therur and Erachikulam. While Mr. Selvam demanded to know whether the municipal administration was really interested in public welfare, Mr. Salman Raj alleged that public grievances were not given due importance in municipal meetings. Earlier, a resolution was passed to call for fresh tenders for the contract of Vadaserry fish market. The Commissioner, Municipal Administration, Sudarshana Chowdhry, had sent a directive to the council, suggesting that fresh tenders be called in view of the projected loss in revenue, if the contract was given to Maria Jebakumar, who had quoted Rs.3 lakhs for the contract.
