Road workers block traffic

By Our Special Correspondent

SALEM, APRIL 7. Police arrested and released gang mazdoors (road workers) belonging to Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts, when they attempted to block traffic in front of the Office of Divisional Engineer, State Highways, near Anna Park here today to urge the Tamil Nadu government to reinstate them in their jobs.

Organised by the Tamil Nadu Road Gang Mazdoors Union, the road workers claimed that they had been without jobs for more than four years now. The State Government failed to implement the High Court ruling, which favoured the workers.

Despite a series of agitations the government was not willing to consider their demands even on humanitarian grounds, they claimed. Mr. V. Siddayan, State president, presided. Political leaders from various parties, including Veerapandi S. Raja, (DMK) addressed the workers. When the workers tried to picket the traffic, police intervened and arrested them. However all were released later in the evening.
