Water consumption to be monitored in Salem

By Our Staff Reporter

SALEM, APRIL 7. Reacting to the series of protests demanding equal distribution of drinking water supply, the Salem Corporation has decided to monitor the water consumption levels of commercial establishments in the city.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the Monitoring Committee on Water Supply in which the members urged the Corporation officials to check the water consumption of hotels, lodges, theatres and other large commercial establishments as they were reportedly drawing the drinking water in large quantities. The members also urged the Corporation to initiate a serious action against those using motors to draw water from the pipelines.

Public and councillors charged that many big commercial establishments in the city were indulging in illegal tapping of drinking water for various other purposes other than drinking. As a result, the equal distribution of water to the public taps and houses was disrupted. The problem went worse when the supply was hit due to technical problems in the supply such as pipe bursts and power disruptions. The members urged the officials to closely monitor illegal tapping.

The committee also recommended the linking of Annathanapatti overhead tank to the second water scheme (Mettur-Salem-Attur) as water supply from the first water scheme was inadequate. The president of the committee and Deputy Mayor, S. Soundappan, Corporation Commissioner, T. T. Balasamy, AIADMK floor leader, A. K. Selvaraj, the opposition leader Kalaiyamudan, ten council members and corporation officials were present.
