ERODE, APRIL 7. Heavy rain that lashed Erode and Salem has caused severe loss to life and property. In Krishnagiri, Dhenkanikottai recorded 82 mm rain. In the Kelavarapalli reservoir water level has reached 40 ft as against the capacity of 44 feet. Reports from Salem said it has been pouring for the last three days. An unidentified person drowned in a channel in Kannankurichi. In Chitode Nadupalayam area in Erode water entered 50-odd huts on the banks of a stream in the village. Three huts were completely destroyed and ten others partially. Rainwater entered 20 huts in Periya Agraharam near Erode, which received 165 mm. The Siddha Vinayagar temple in Municipal Colony, the Municipal Market and the Mohammed Abdul Gani Market and other places got inundated. Lightning struck a cattle-pound in Vettukattuvalasu near Erode. Power supply was stopped for one hour in the town. The District Collector, D. Karthikeyan, said relief measures were provided to the rain affected people. Our Staff Reporter writes from Salem: The hill station of Yercaud, near Salem, also received good showers. Tourists who had started arriving to the resort enjoyed the cool weather. An official in the agriculture department here said that some of the lakes and tanks in the district were filled up. The rain has brought hopes to the farmers, he added. The district has been experiencing drought conditions for the last four years. Rain recorded in various parts is as follows: Erode - 165, Bhavani - 86 mm, Dharapuram - 57 mm, Sathyamangalam - 46 mm, Perundurai - 44 mm, Kangeyam - 40 mm, Moolanure - 25 mm, Bhavanisagar - 23 mm, Gobichettipalayam - 24 mm and Chitode, Anthiyur and Kavindapady - 30 mm. In Salem, Gengavalli registered a maximum rainfall of 54.2 mm. Sankagiri - 48.8 mm, Salem - 42.2 mm, Mettur - 41.6 mm, Edapadi - 36.4 mm, Yercaud - 28.8 mm, Omalur - 18.4 mm, Vazhapadi - 18 mm and Attur 15.2 mm. Till March 1, the district received only 31 mm. The average rainfall recorded in other areas in Krishnagiri the past 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday is as follows: Shoolagiri - 77 mm, Rayakottai - 58 mm, Thally - 53 mm, Nedungal - 31.2 mm, Krishnagiri - 30.8 mm, Barur - 29.8 mm, Hosur - 20 mm and Pocchampalli - 10.2 mm. The average rainfall recorded in Dharmapuri is as follows: Pappireddipatti - 80 mm, Collectorate - 74 mm, Dharmapuri - 64.6 mm, Pennagaram - 18 mm, Palacode - 16.4 mm and Harur - 7.4 mm. However there was no rain at Panchapalli reservoir the main source of water supply to Dharmapuri Municipality.
