E-beat system for police activated in Mysore

MYSORE, APRIL 7. The electronic beat or e-beat system for night patrolling in the city was launched here today by the Additional Director General of Police, S.T. Ramesh.

The system came into effect on Thursday night, and Mysore is the second city after Bangalore to get the system. With the launch of the e-beat system, 17 police stations will be linked.

Sources said police personnel have been trained in operating the e-beat system. A two-day training programme was held for them in March. All police stations in the city will be brought under e-beat and there are 1,600 beat points here. Under the e-beat system, police constables patrolling the areas assigned to them will have to swipe an electronic chip card on readers at the beat points. The system leaves little scope for constables to play truant. For, the time of his visit to each beat point will be electronically stored and can be accessed by his superiors.

In the existing system, constables will be assigned patrolling routes that have at least 12 checkpoints where books are kept. The constables have to sign the books at the time of their visit to the points. An officer of the rank of sub-inspector of police later scrutinises the entries made in the books. However, in the existing system there is scope for the entries to be made in the morning as though they have been made at night.

The e-beat system ensures a foolproof mechanism to ascertain the visits made by the constables. An electronic chip card will be given to each night beat constable.

The policeman has to swipe the card on readers that will replace the books kept at the checkpoints. Later, the constable has to swipe the card on the reader kept at the respective police station also. Under this system, the data pertaining to the time of the visit to each checkpoint will be automatically fed into the computer.
