Touch of glamour for `Ugadi sambaralu'

VISAKHAPATNAM, APRIL 7. Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) will organise a variety entertainment programme with cinema actors on the occasion of Ugadi on Saturday.

The VUDA Chairman, P.S.N. Raju, told newsmen that that this was the first time that VUDA was conducting such a programme in the city. Actors Brahmanandam, M.S. Narayana, Sunil, Venu Madhav, Siva Reddy, Uttej, Latha, Harikishen and others would participate in `Ugadi sambaralu', to be presented by Dharmavarapu Subrahmanyam.

Hasya Kadambam with comedians, Hasya Kavi Sammelanam with Bethavolu Ramabrahmam, M.S. Narayana and Satyaprasad and P. Venkatrao as participants, a parody by Parody Guruswami, mimicry by Harikishan and Sri Manjunatha Perini Siva Tandavam dance by Basheer and party are on the programme card.

Mr. Raju also said that Brahmanandam would be felicitated on the occasion for being conferred honorary doctorate by Nagarjuna University. "Entry is open to all. We plan to organise similar cultural programmes every 15 days,'' he said.

Sports promotion

VUDA had decided to promote sports by encouraging local talent and would spend Rs.10 lakhs on badminton in the city, he said. The VUDA Vice-Chairman, D. Varaprasad, said this was only the beginning and more such programmes would be organised by appointing a couple of event managers for the purpose.

On the activities of VUDA, he said that it was keen on providing quality housing at low rates to employees in the lower income group (LIG) and middle income group (MIG). "To begin with, we are building 300 LIG flats at Kurmannapalem and the plan will take a final shape in a fortnight. We will provide housing in busy places instead of at some far corner'', he said.

Women's hostel

Another project would be a workingwomen's hostel in the city. A building on 1,000 or 1,200 sqare yards would provide accommodation to 200 workingwomen with all facilities, including recreation, for comfortable stay. The project would come up at Madhavadhara, Mr. Varaprasad said.
