Hamsa awards announced
The Director of Culture, Arja Srikant, in a press release here on Thursday announced the list of awardees. The awardees are Dandamudi Ramamohana Rao, Vijayawada (music), Dhimsa dance artist, Janakamma, Paderu (folk), Surya Prakash (painting/sculptor) and S. A. Baba Rao, Nalgonda (Surabhi theatre). A committee, appointed by the Government with C. Narayana Reddy as president, Justice Punnaiah, Andhra Pradesh Press Academy chairman and Devulapalli Amar as members and the Director of Culture as convener, had shortlisted the awardees.
Mandolin Srinivas to be feted
The award is presented every year to a leading artiste by the Festival Committee at its music fete co-sponsored by the TTD.
Pact soon on hospitals' cadre
In a brief chat with reporters, the Principal Secretary (Health), I.V. Subba Rao, said that it had been decided to remove the "mismatch" in teaching and general hospitals and do away with the combined cadre system, which was in vogue.
New facility at AFA
The facility, provided by Zoom Technologies (India) Private Limited, a data networking solutions provider, enables the Academy IT Centre to get connected to different faculties/squadron buildings on the campus. Each faculty and squadron offices could now avail the database server, web server, mail server, authentication server, and antivirus server on the entire campus on high-speed fibre backbone with Gigabit connectivity. The network would bring in significant super computing resources into a shared high-speed facility using Gigabit Ethernet switching on fibre optic cable, according to the Zoom Technologies Managing Director, M. H. Noble.
JVV against Ugadi ritual
In a statement issued here on Thursday, the Humanist Association general secretary, N. Innaiah, and the JVV secretary, K. Rajendra Prasad, said that encouraging superstitions through muhurthams was a clear violation of constitutional fundamental duty. They said that astrological muhurthams and panchagam should be confined to individual blind beliefs and Government should not officially spend any amount on such unscientific programmes.
Recruitment ban in RTC flayed
In a statement on Thursday, the AITUC general secretary, P. J. Chandrasekhara Rao, said that the Government should not interfere in the day-to-day affairs of the corporation.He said the management should be given a free hand in recruitment of drivers, conductors and others.
ICRS decision upsets BHPV
Terming the decision as `unilateral', the BHPV management pointed out that the investor had agreed for delayed payment of interest after the issue was taken up with him. The spokesman asked the ICRA Limited to arrange a meeting with the company and investor before taking any action.
NSUI gheraoes SKU V-C
The NSUI leaders said three persons appointed in the lower cadre in the department in 1991 had been drawing assistant professor's salary since their appointment in violation of rules. In fact, all the three were promoted as assistant professors just eight months ago. They demanded recovery of the money taken in excess of their legitimate pay. The Vice Chancellor assured the students of appointing a committee to inquire into the matter.
Ahobilam pontiff at Tirumala
The Swamiji was received with temple honours on his arrival at the `Ragi Manu' and was traditionally escorted to the main temple where the TTD Executive Officer, A.P.V.N. Sharma, received him with customary honours. After the darshan of the presiding deity, the chief priest of the temple presented him with the `sesha vastram' (silk vastram) of the Lord.

Meanwhile in Indukurpet, the police arrested 15 persons in connection with another group clash.
Farmer commits suicide
World Health Day observed
The District Medical and Health Officer, Ramakrishna Reddy, flagged of a rally in the town comprising doctors, nurses and other medical staff to mark the occasion. The rally culminated in a meeting at the district headquarters hospital.

Five hurt in mishap
The injured were admitted to the Government Hospital at Rapur. According to available information, the accident occurred near a curve when a batch of pilgrims from Chennai were on their way to the Penchala Narasimhaswamy temple.
Heavy rain in Rapur
The farmers are the worst-hit as the paddy and fodder got damaged due to the unexpected rain. Since tractors and bullock carts could not go into the fields, due to water logging, the farmers themselves had to carry the produce to safer places.
Lorry rams into STD booth
The lorry was going from Tirupati to Kodur when brake failure caused the mishap. The Kodur police registered a case.
Woman's body found
Police traced the woman's body today and suspect that she might have been done to death two days ago. The Jammalamadugu DSP, K.N. Bhaskaran, and Kondapuram CI, G.V. Ramana, inspected the scene of murder.
