Hamsa awards announced

HYDERABAD: Noted litterateur, Seshendra Sharma, and Kuchipudi dance exponent, Nataraja Ramakrishna, are among the six eminent personalities of art and culture selected for Hamsa awards 2004-05.

The Director of Culture, Arja Srikant, in a press release here on Thursday announced the list of awardees. The awardees are Dandamudi Ramamohana Rao, Vijayawada (music), Dhimsa dance artist, Janakamma, Paderu (folk), Surya Prakash (painting/sculptor) and S. A. Baba Rao, Nalgonda (Surabhi theatre).

A committee, appointed by the Government with C. Narayana Reddy as president, Justice Punnaiah, Andhra Pradesh Press Academy chairman and Devulapalli Amar as members and the Director of Culture as convener, had shortlisted the awardees.

Mandolin Srinivas to be feted

TIRUPATI: Mandolin maestro, U. Srinivas, will be the recipient of this year's `Sapthagiri Sangeeta Vidwanmani' award at the 63rd Annual Festival of Music and Dance scheduled to be held at Tirupati on July 25. Padmasri Srinivas was selected for the award at the expert committee meeting of Sri Thyagaraja Festival Committee, Tirupati, on Thursday with its president, TTD's Executive Officer, A.P.V. Narayana Sarma, in the chair.

The award is presented every year to a leading artiste by the Festival Committee at its music fete co-sponsored by the TTD.

Pact soon on hospitals' cadre

HYDERABAD: An accord will be reached soon between the Health Department and the Government Doctors' Association to have a separate cadre for teaching hospitals.

In a brief chat with reporters, the Principal Secretary (Health), I.V. Subba Rao, said that it had been decided to remove the "mismatch" in teaching and general hospitals and do away with the combined cadre system, which was in vogue.

New facility at AFA

HYDERABAD: A high-speed fibre optic Campus Area Network (CAN) was inaugurated at the Air Force Academy, Dundigal, near here by the Academy Commandant, Air Vice Marshal, Y. R. Rane, on Thursday.

The facility, provided by Zoom Technologies (India) Private Limited, a data networking solutions provider, enables the Academy IT Centre to get connected to different faculties/squadron buildings on the campus. Each faculty and squadron offices could now avail the database server, web server, mail server, authentication server, and antivirus server on the entire campus on high-speed fibre backbone with Gigabit connectivity.

The network would bring in significant super computing resources into a shared high-speed facility using Gigabit Ethernet switching on fibre optic cable, according to the Zoom Technologies Managing Director, M. H. Noble.

JVV against Ugadi ritual

HYDERABAD: The Jana Vignana Vedika and the Humanist and Rationalist Association have objected to the official function of `Panchanga Sravanam' based on astrology.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, the Humanist Association general secretary, N. Innaiah, and the JVV secretary, K. Rajendra Prasad, said that encouraging superstitions through muhurthams was a clear violation of constitutional fundamental duty. They said that astrological muhurthams and panchagam should be confined to individual blind beliefs and Government should not officially spend any amount on such unscientific programmes.

Recruitment ban in RTC flayed

HYDERABAD: The All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) State council has protested the decision of the Government to ban recruitment in APSRTC.

In a statement on Thursday, the AITUC general secretary, P. J. Chandrasekhara Rao, said that the Government should not interfere in the day-to-day affairs of the corporation.He said the management should be given a free hand in recruitment of drivers, conductors and others.

ICRS decision upsets BHPV

VISAKHAPATNAM: The downgrading of credit rating assigned to Bharat Heavy Plate and Vessels Limited by Messrs. ICRA Limited has irked the BHPV management. A BHPV spokesman on Thursday expressed anguish at the downgrading from LAAA (SO) to LBB (SO) for non-payment of interest amount due as on March 31, 2005, to an investor.

Terming the decision as `unilateral', the BHPV management pointed out that the investor had agreed for delayed payment of interest after the issue was taken up with him. The spokesman asked the ICRA Limited to arrange a meeting with the company and investor before taking any action.

NSUI gheraoes SKU V-C

ANANTAPUR: Members of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) today gheraoed the Vice-Chancellor of Sri Krishnadevaraya University (SKU), Mohd. Iqhbal Ahmed, demanding judicial enquiry into the alleged irregularities in the Computer Science Department.

The NSUI leaders said three persons appointed in the lower cadre in the department in 1991 had been drawing assistant professor's salary since their appointment in violation of rules. In fact, all the three were promoted as assistant professors just eight months ago.

They demanded recovery of the money taken in excess of their legitimate pay. The Vice Chancellor assured the students of appointing a committee to inquire into the matter.

Ahobilam pontiff at Tirumala

TIRUMALA: Sri Van Satagopa Narayana Yateendra Maha Desikan, the 45th pontiff of Ahobilam, offered prayers at Lord Venkateswara temple at Tirumala on Thursday.

The Swamiji was received with temple honours on his arrival at the `Ragi Manu' and was traditionally escorted to the main temple where the TTD Executive Officer, A.P.V.N. Sharma, received him with customary honours.

After the darshan of the presiding deity, the chief priest of the temple presented him with the `sesha vastram' (silk vastram) of the Lord.

Nine hurt in group clash

NELLORE: Nine persons sustained injuries following a clash between two groups in Mungamuru village of Bogole mandal on Wednesday following a row over the way towards an agriculture field. resulted in heated exchanges and a clash. All the injured have been admitted in the Government Hospital, Kavali. Both parties lodged complaints with the police.

Meanwhile in Indukurpet, the police arrested 15 persons in connection with another group clash.

Farmer commits suicide

KURNOOL: A farmer, Kesanna (40), committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Pedda Nelatur under Gonegandla police station limits in Kurnool district on Thursday.

World Health Day observed

CHITTOOR: World Health Day was observed here on Thursday by the Medical and Health Department.

The District Medical and Health Officer, Ramakrishna Reddy, flagged of a rally in the town comprising doctors, nurses and other medical staff to mark the occasion. The rally culminated in a meeting at the district headquarters hospital.

Ph.D awarded

ANANTAPUR: Sri Krishnadevaraya University has awarded a Degree in Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) to K. Shantha for her thesis on

"Electro-chemical study of metal complexes. The research was supervised by K. Sudhakar Babu of the Department of Chemistry of SKU P.G. Centre at Kurnool.

Five hurt in mishap

NELLORE: Five persons were injured when the vehicle in which they were travelling overturned on the Rapur to Penchalakona road of Rapur mandal.

The injured were admitted to the Government Hospital at Rapur.

According to available information, the accident occurred near a curve when a batch of pilgrims from Chennai were on their way to the Penchala Narasimhaswamy temple.

Heavy rain in Rapur

NELLORE: Rapur and its surroundings experienced heavy rainfall for the second day on Wednesday, resulting in inundation of low-lying areas.

The farmers are the worst-hit as the paddy and fodder got damaged due to the unexpected rain. Since tractors and bullock carts could not go into the fields, due to water logging, the farmers themselves had to carry the produce to safer places.

Lorry rams into STD booth

CUDDAPAH: An STD booth owner, Jallu Penchalaiah, was killed and a woman sustained severe injuries when a lorry rammed into the STD booth near Settigunta in Kodur mandal on Thursday.

The lorry was going from Tirupati to Kodur when brake failure caused the mishap. The Kodur police registered a case.

Woman's body found

CUDDAPAH: An alcohol addict, Venkataiah, allegedly beat his wife, Thulasamma (26), to death and decamped with her gold ornaments in agricultural fields near Dattapuram in Kondapuram mandal.

Police traced the woman's body today and suspect that she might have been done to death two days ago.

The Jammalamadugu DSP, K.N. Bhaskaran, and Kondapuram CI, G.V. Ramana, inspected the scene of murder.

Ornaments, clothes stolen

CUDDAPAH: Unidentified persons stole gold ornaments and clothes worth Rs. 30,000 from a house in Avusettipalle village near Galiveedu late last night.
