Final design of houses for tsunami victims ready

KOLLAM, APRIL 7. The dispute over the design for the disaster-resistant permanent houses to be constructed by voluntary organisations for the tsunami victims of Alapad in Kollam district has been settled. The District Collector, B. Sreenivas, said on Thursday that the final design has been cleared.

This would enable 23 voluntary organisations to contribute towards constructing 1,954 houses under the first phase of the rehabilitation programme. The voluntary organisations entrusted with the task include the Quilon Social Service Society (QSSS) and the Mata Amritanandamayi Math.

The highest number of houses will be constructed by the Math.

The Math was earlier given sanction to construct all the required houses in wards 4 to 13 of the Alapad panchayat. Following talks at a meeting with the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, in Thiruvananthapuram, the Math has been allocated construction of houses in wards 1 to 3 too.

In all, 2,210 houses will have to be constructed. 2,120 beneficiaries have been identified and listed.

The voluntary organisations that will engage in construction of houses are Mata Amritanandamayi Math, 961, the Kerala Catholic Bishops Conference and the QSSS, 395, KASA, 74, Mar Thoma Syrian Church, 75, Malayala Manorama, 94, Sathya Sai Seva Samithy, 25, Jeevan TV, 20, Good Samaritan Project India, 30, World Vision, 77, Lions Club International, 6, Malankara Orthodox Church, 20, K.E. Abraham Foundation, 12, Infam Agro Movement, 10, Christian Church of Christ, 9, Kerala State Electricity Board Association, 1, NRI Returnees Welfare Organisation, 5, Salvation Army, 5, Kerala Transport Company, 19, Popes, 9, Oisca International, 8, Young Men's Christian Association, 19, CPI (M), 70, and Rev. P.K. Yoahanan, 10.
