KOZHIKODE, APRIL 7. With the focus this year on the theme `every mother and child counts', programmes organised here in connection with the World Health Day centred on uplifting the health status of the two. The Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College, in association with the Department of Social Work, St. Joseph's Devagiri College, and the NGO group Community Health Links organised a photo- poster awareness campaign at the moffusil bus stand here today. Pamphlets were also distributed during the campaign, which evoked good response.
Novel initiative
In a novel initiative, students delivered a two-minute talk to bus passengers on disease prevention. The Head of the Department of Community Medicine, K.Vijayakumar, said the awareness campaign was focussing on prevention of communicable diseases. He said emphasis was being placed on prevention of infections such as tuberculosis, diarrhoea, HIV/AIDS, dengue and hepatitis. The health status of the mother and child was affected to a large extent by the incidence of infectious diseases, and the need to control these was being stressed.
Stress on hygiene
Tuberculosis could be contained by examination of sputum and effective treatment. Water-borne diseases, especially during monsoon, could be prevented through individual hygiene and proper sanitation. The campaign was inaugurated by Sunil Chirath, a polio-afflicted person. More than 50 medical students and an equal number of students of social work from Devagiri College participated in the campaign. The head of the Department of Social Work, Devagiri College, P.M. Mathew, was present. The NGOs participating in the campaign included the Indian Youth Association, Vanitha Society, Childline, Thanal, Health Dialogue and Suraksha Hospital, among others.
Awareness campaign
Meetings will be held for a month in the suburbs in the district, emphasising the need to control communicable diseases. The department will network with organisations such as Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad, Dr.Vijaya Kumar added. The district-level programme was held at the Narikunni Community Health Centre.
