Farmers seek reconstruction of tank bund

By Our Staff Correspondent

TUMKUR, APRIL 7. Farmers of five villages in the command area of Baddihalli Tank have urged the Government to reconstruct a portion of the tank bund demolished in March and to stop the Tumkur City Municipal Council (CMC) from dumping solid waste into storm-water drains in the tank's catchment area.

A portion of the tank bund was demolished by engineers of the Tumkur Development Authority and the municipal council.

The work was called off after farmers protested.

Puttanna, Narasappa, Sannalingaiah and Lakshmanaiah, farmers' leaders, and the president of the Tank Protection Committee, Ramanayak, took presspersons around the tank and its catchment area on Thursday following rainfall in the district.

Mr. Ramanayak said it is essential to rebuild the demolished portion of the tank bund to store rainwater.

Farmers showed several spots along the storm-water drains where solid waste has been dumped, allegedly by the CMC.

They charged that the CMC wants to block rainwater from flowing into the tank so that it can be diverted elsewhere.

They said that in 1998, the Government gave land to the erstwhile Karnataka Electricity Board in the tank bed.

When they opposed it, the board took notice of the farmers' opposition and sought to buy land from farmers.

Three of them obliged by selling their land.

They said Kendriya Vidyalaya, Tumkur, should follow the example of the board.

The vidyalaya can also be given 10 acres of land in the vicinity of the Deputy Commissioner's residence in Kalidasanagar.

A vast stretch of government land is available there, they said.

Bangarappa approached

Mr. Lakshmanaiah said he had a talk with S. Bangarappa, President of the Samajwadi Party State unit, over phone and requested him to intervene to save the tank.

The farmers said all the major parties are silent over the issue. They said they have urged the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to order a CoD probe into the tank demolition. But nothing has happened, they said and added this had forced them to approach Mr. Bangarappa.
