KOLAR, APRIL 7. The State Government is exploring the possibility of imposing a blanket ban on paddy cultivation in areas where the water-table has gone down considerably and also banning drilling of borewells for irrigation, the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, has said. Speaking at a meeting here on Thursday, the Chief Minister said that as Kolar district was the worst hit by drought, the State Government will release adequate funds for taking up drinking water projects. During the meeting, the Horticulture Minister, Alangur R. Srinivas, brought to the notice of the Chief Minister that the district is facing acute drinking water scarcity and urged the Chief Minister to explore the possibility of utilising the water that has collected in abandoned mine shafts. The Minister's view was endorsed by Srinivasa Reddy, Superintending Engineer of Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board, who said the the water can be tapped for drinking. He said that a Singapore-based firm has agreed to make the water potable at an estimated cost of Rs. 10 crores. The Chief Minister said he will soon convene a meeting of the authorities and legislators of Kolar district to explore the possibility of utilising the water in the mine shafts. The Chief Minister also said that removing silt from tanks should be taken up on a massive scale and called upon the authorities to prepare a blueprint for the project. He promised to visit Kolar again to address some of the problems faced by the people. V.R. Sudarshan, Chairman of the Legislative Council; Anjana Murthy, Housing Minister; Sudhakara Reddy, C.B. Krishna Byre Gowda, S.N. Krishnaiah Setty, and B.P. Venkatamuniyappa, all legislators; G.N. Nayak, Deputy Commissioner; and C. Nagaiah, Chief Executive Officer, Kolar Zilla Panchayat; were present.
