Invitation tournament from April 20

BANGALORE, APRIL 7. If the inaugural Indira Priyadarshini Cup all-India Invitation women's volleyball tournament was a resounding success, the credit goes to the Vijayanagar Sports Club and its patron V. Somanna, MLA. The Gandhi Maidan grounds at Vijayanagar will be abuzz again when the second edition of the tournament will be held from April 20 to 24. And adding to the prestige of the tourney is the men's tournament for the Rajiv Gandhi Cup.

The organisers have managed to secure the participation of top teams in the country with prize money of Rs.1 lakh for the winner. Star-studded ONGC (Uttaranchal), Kochi Refineries (Kochi), Indian Overseas Bank (Chennai), South Central Railway (Secunderabad), Income Tax (Hyderabad), the Maharashtra and Haryana state teams besides Indian Navy are the major attractions in the men's section.

In the women's section, last year's winner South Central Railway (Secunderabad) will once begin favourite with Maharashtra, Kerala and host Karnataka state teams making the numbers, to be played on a round robin league format.

The Gandhi Madian court is being spruced up for the event with a gallery to accommodate about 5,000 spectators. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, will inaugurate the tournament on April 20 while the Union Sports Minister, Sunil Dutt, is expected to be the chief guest for the closing ceremony.
