TIRUVANNAMALAI, APRIL 7. Three children below the age of 14 were found working in weaving units following surprise inspections carried out by the police and the assistant inspectors of labour of Arni, Tiruvathipuram and Tiruvannamalai. The inspections were carried out in 43 weaving units in Puduppattu, Chitheri, Thuntharikambattu and Vilai villages surrounding Arni and in Pallanthangal and Thirumani villages in Thiruvathipuram taluk in Tiruvannamalai district recently. Four children were found to be employed in weaving units following raids carried out jointly by the assistant inspector of labour, Arni, field coordinator of the Indo-U.S. (INDUS) child labour elimination project, Tiruvannamalai district and representatives of a non-governmental organisation in Velappadi village in Arni taluk recently. The Collector, Satyabrata Sahoo said in a release that legal action is being initiated against the owners of all the seven weaving units who employed the children. The Collector said that steps were being taken to admit the children found during the raids in school. Steps were also being taken through various departments to enable the parents of the children to earn income for their families.
