Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, APRIL 7. The Parliamentary secretary to the Chief Minister, A.V. Sreedharan, today protested the Centre's move to convert Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIMPER), into an autonomous institution. Participating in an inconclusive debate on the demands for grants to the health, port and justice departments in the Assembly, Mr. Sreedharan said that the workers and employees of JIPMER (now under the Directorate General of Health Services, New Delhi) were concerned over their future if it was made autonomous. He urged the Pondicherry administration to persuade the Centre to maintain its status quo

He said that steps should be taken to curb the mosquito menace in Mahe. Mr. Sreedharan stressed the need to establish a Workers Education Centre. P. Angalan (Congress) said that the primary health centre in Tirubuvanai should function round-the-clock. He alleged that a number of industries in Pondicherry were exploiting workers by paying a mere Rs. 30 a day for 12 hours or work. Neela Gangadharan (Congress) said that the community health centres in the villages should have separate post-mortem wings so that bodies need not be brought to the headquarters.
