Rectify shortcomings in health sector, says Speaker

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, APRIL 7. The Speaker of the Pondicherry Assembly, M.D.R. Ramachandran, today provided a touch of philosophy during a debate on the Government seeking more grants for some departments, including the health department.

During the Congress' Neela Gangadharan's speech, Mr. Ramachandran said that the administration should make a strong case to the Centre to ensure that primary health centres here were equipped with modern facilities.

Mr. Gangadharan was earlier referring to the setbacks suffered by health centres in even matters such as appointments of plumbers, and electricians.

Mr. Ramachandran said health authorities should write to authorities in Delhi to rectify these shortcomings. As no follow-up communication was maintained once the Centre framed the guidelines covering the Primary Health Centres, they were left to fend for themselves.

Mr. Ramachandran stressed the need for better health services for the sustained care of the poor.

Referring to the general nature of certain ailments, he said that if one became a diabetic or had blood pressure, he would rarely be fully cured, though these could be controlled.

"Our relatives would move away from us but these ailments stay permanently with us as our pals and friends," Mr. Ramachandran said.
