Takeover of roads a normal practice: MLA

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, APRIL 7. K. Babu, Tripunithura MLA, said here today that takeover of roads by the Department of Public Works (PWD) was a normal practice.

He was replying to the reservation expressed by the Deputy Mayor, A.V. George, to his statement that 18 roads would be taken over by the department. Mr. George had said that six of these roads were in the jurisdiction of the Kochi Corporation, and hence, the move was improper.

At a press conference, Mr. Babu said he was not interested in a war of words with the corporation. Nevertheless, he would like to know the reaction of the Mayor, who was on tour, to the controversy.

He said local bodies faced financial constraints in maintaining all the roads in their respective limits. As much as 8,191 km of roads had been taken over in the State under the Oommen Chandy Government. The Panchayat Raj Act permitted the takeover, in consultation with local bodies. He had not intended to take a unilateral decision on the issue.

Mr. Babu said he had received many complaints on the poor condition of roads in his Assembly constituency, some of which were within the limits of the corporation. His statement was, however, misunderstood as it did not refer to Sahodaran Ayyappan Road as had been alleged, but it pertained only to Janatha Road touching the former near Vyttila.

Bus station

The MLA refuted the charge that nothing had been done to set up a bus station at Vyttila. The Department of Agriculture had been urged to release land for the facility. He said the corporation had not sought his help to identify a location for the bus station, nor did it find a site on its own.

He said a stationmaster's office of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation would start functioning at Vyttila soon.
