Himachal Pradesh
SHIMLA, APRIL 7. The high altitude areas in tribal belt and other higher reaches and mountain passes in Himachal Pradesh had another spell of moderate snowfall while the midhills including the state capital were lashed by storm accompanied by rain and sleet. The mighty Rohtang, Kunzam Saach and Pin-Parwati Passes as also the sprawling Dhauladhar ranges in Kangra district had moderate snowfall and high velocity icy winds continued to lash the high mountain areas. Shimla was lashed by high velocity winds accompanied by intermittent rains causing sharp fall in the day temperature. The sky remained heavily overcast throughout the day and people preferred to stay indoors. The lower areas of Manali, Kullu, Mandi, Bilaspur, Solan and Sirmaur were also swept by strong winds accompanied by drizzle.
Trekkers rescued
A group of four women trekkers from United Kingdom, who were stranded in adverse conditions on a trek from Jari to Naggar via Chandarkhani Pass in Kullu district, were air lifted to the base camp this afternoon. The trekking team members, a cook, guide and four porters, and others were flown by a helicopter to the chopper company's base camp at Manali, Manjit Bhalla, base manager of the company at Mandi, told PTI. He said the flights were operated inspite of adverse weather conditions and the treekers were shifted to a local hospital. After traversing the Chandarkhani pass, the women trekkers started experiencing the effects of high altitude sickness, fatigue and unusually cold and windy conditions and were unable to trek the remaining distance, Bhalla said.
