51 students debarred for malpractice

By Our Special Correspondent

GULBARGA, APRIL 7. The debarring of more than 80 students by officials of the Education Department for indulging in malpractice in the second year Pre-University Course examinations in the district appears to have had little effect on students, who continue to indulge in mass copying.

Vigilance squads at different examination centres in the district caught 51 students red-handed while they were copying in an examination on Thursday. They have been debarred from the examination.

Mass copying in public examinations is a recurrent problem in the region and has remained uncontrollable despite several tough measures adopted by Education Department officials.

One of the reasons cited by the officials for the continued copying is the lack of cooperation from invigilators at examination centres.

When this correspondent visited one of the examination centres in the city on Thursday morning, more than 30 minutes after the examination began, the Sociology paper was available outside the examination centre.

People were seen hurriedly jotting down answers and passing it on to students inside the examination halls. Many students were seen seated close together on small benches, exchanging notes with answers on them.

Official sources said that so far more than 120 students have been debarred for indulging in malpractices in the district. Eighteen students were debarred today from the Jewargi Government Pre-University College examination centre; 12 from the Government Pre-University College examination centre at Shahabad in Chitapur taluk and seven students were debarred from the New Kannada Pre-University College at Yadgir.

Six students were also debarred from the examinations from the Government Pre-University College examination centre at Yadgir; and three from the Government Pre-University College examination centre at Shahapur.
