Test for CRPF selection

Candidates who have qualified in the physical test for the post of ASI (steno) and Head Constable (ministerial) in Central Reserve Police Force held at Group Centre, Pallipuram, from February 17 to 19 and have been issued admit cards for appearing for written examination should report at Pallipuram at 9 a.m. on April 10. The candidates should bring admit cards as well as call letter issued to them. The test will be conducted at Kendriya Vidyalaya, CRPF Campus, Pallipuram. The candidates should come prepared as per the instructions contained in the admit card and call letter. The candidates reporting after the scheduled time will not be allowed to sit for the examination, the CRPF Additional DIGP, P.G.G. Nair, said.
Amount sanctioned
The Govenrment has sanctioned Rs. 13.56 crores for the repair of fishing harbours and fish landing centres damaged by the tsunami. This was announced by the Fisheries Minister, Dominic Presentation, at a review meeting held here on Thursday.
Exempted fron treasury curbs
As many as 33 items have been excluded from the treasury restrictions till June 30. They include personal transactions up to Rs 10,000, withdrawal of personal TSB and fixed deposits, boarding expenditure of institutions, withdrawal of PF, advances and assistance for TB and cancer patients.
Fellowship awarded
M.S. Bindu, Research Associate, Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Kerala, has been awarded the Women Scientists Fellowship of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. The fellowship issued under "Science and Society" programme is aimed at providing opportunities to women scientists holding Ph.D. degrees to pursue research in frontier areas of science and technology. Recipient of the first Ph.D. in Environmental Science from the University, Dr. Bindu has also received the Senior Research Fellowship of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Research Associate ship of University Grants Commission (UGC).
Long-term agreement
A fresh long-term agreement has come into existence in Hindustan Newsprint at Velloor in Kottayam. Under the agreement reached between the management and the workers in the presence of the Labour Commissioner, S. Sreenivasan, the daily wagers would get a hike ranging between 18 and 25 per cent. It would be applicable to all categories of daily wagers. The bonus for the years from 2004-05 to 2006-07 would be 12.5 per cent. The workers would also be eligible for Onam advance of Rs. 5,000 each during these years. The arrears under the fresh agreement would be given before June 10. The agreement would be considered to be in force from November 2004 to October 31, 2007.
Contribution to relief fund
The State Bank of Hyderabad today handed over a draft for Rs.1,00,000 to the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, towards tsunami relief fund.
Campaign baseless: JSS

The Janadhipathya Samrakshana Samithy (JSS) today dismissed as baseless the campaign that a section of the JSS in the district is merging with the Community Marxist Party (CMP). The JSS State secretary, N.N. Sadanandan, told a press conference here today that Kasturi Devan and Dharmadas, who had resigned from the party, were behind the propaganda that a group of party workers in the district was joining the CMP. Mr. Devan had been indulging in anti-party activities since he had lost party district secretary post in the district party election.
FNPO State meeting

The State convention of the Federation of National Postal Organisation (FNPO) will be held at Kuttippuram on Saturday and Sunday. The State president of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), K. Suresh Babu, will inaugurate the convention.
Eco-awareness rallies

Environmentalists, in coordination with the Forest Department, will hold rallies to celebrate Earth Day on April 22. The rallies will be flagged off from Kasaragod and Thiruvananthapuram on April 15. A seminar on `Environment' will be held in Ernakulam where the rallies will reach on April 20. The rallies will conclude at Marayur where a meeting would be convened, pledging protection to sandalwood trees. Announcing this at a press conference here on Thursday, the reception committee chairman, P.T. Thomas, said conservation of forests would be necessary to stop environmental degradation. Environmentalists C.M. Joy, John Peruvanthanam, Abdul Salaam and K.S. Shaji were present at the press meet.
Free education scheme

The Sudarshanam Central School at Aranmula has decided to extend free education from first standard to 12 for three most eligible students hailing from the economically backward sections of society from the next academic year, according to the school Principal, M. Anilkumar. Various socio-cultural organisations as well as the grama panchayats of Aranmula, Mallappuzhasserry and Kozhencherry can nominate children for consideration to the free education scheme of the Sudarshanam Charitable Trust (Ph: 0468-2318797), he said.
Black day
Government doctors will observe black day on Sunday in protest against the suspension of the Kozhikode District Medical Officer (DMO), K. T. Remani. The DMO was suspended on charges of alleged irregularities in appointment of part-time sweepers. Condemning the action against the DMO, the district general body of the Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) said all prescribed norms were followed by the DMO while selecting part-time sweepers for appointment.
KSTEU demands bus services

A meeting of the Kerala State Transport Employees Union (KSTEU) district committee today demanded that KSRTC start bus services between Kannur and Kozhikode in view of the need of the travelling public. It was pointed out that the Kannur-Malappuram and Kannur-Thrissur town-to-town services were cancelled following pressure from private bus operators. The meeting wanted the bus body building to be carried out at the KSRTC regional workshops, and payment of proper wages to those appointed under PSC/dependent category. Benoy Viswom, MLA, inaugurated the meeting. The KSTEU district president, M.C. Aboobaker, presided.
School building opened
The Minister for Industries, V.K. Ebrahim Kunju, today opened a new building at the Naduvannur Government Higher Secondary School, near here. The building with six classrooms was constructed with the Sarva Shiksha Abhayan fund at a cost of Rs. 6 lakhs. The Balussery block panchayat president, M. Raghavan, presided. The report was presented by the school Principal, P.K. Anandan.
