THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 7. The Minister for Health, K.K. Ramachandran, has denied the allegation that his office was taking bribes for posting newly selected assistant surgeons in places of their choice. "Transfers and postings are not the work of the Minister's Office," the Minister told a press conference today. He said that if any of his personnel staff were found taking money, he would be removed from his post. Mr. Ramachandran said that all recruits could not be posted to the place of their choice on account of the disparity in the number of candidates from North and South Kerala. For example, the Public Service Commission had given advice memo to 124 persons in Thiruvananthapuram district whereas there were only six posts in the district. On the other hand, there were only 34 applicants from Kannur, who were issued advice memos, against 102 posts in the district. So, most people had to be posted in other districts. He said that he would inquire into closure of the ENT operation theatre and other facilities at the Medical College Hospital here. The appointment of a director to the Virology Institute at Alappuzha would be done soon, he said. The Minister said the next round of Pulse Polio Immunisation would be carried out on April 10 and May 15. There would be two rounds during the year. The vaccine would be administered through 23,568 booths manned by 47,000 volunteers and health workers.
