Directive on admission to homoeopathy course

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, APRIL 7. The Kerala High Court today directed the Principal and Controlling Officer, Government Homeopathy Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, to give an option to the students already admitted to the M.D. course in homeopathy for choosing the newly introduced three subjects for the course. Justice C.N. Ramachandran Nair today issued the direction on a writ petition filed by Franco Joseph of Thrissur and other students. According to them, the State Government had allotted additional seats with three new subjects for the course. The new course was introduced after starting the classes. The Government decided to admit students from the rank list prepared for the existing 36 seats. The petitioners claimed that they were entitled to get admission to the new course as they ranked higher in the list. Moves were on to admit candidates with lower ranks, the petitioners submitted. The court said that if fresh selection was to be conducted from the existing rank list, the candidates with higher ranks who had been admitted were entitled to exercise their option for new courses. The court ordered that the candidates for the new courses be selected within two weeks.

Adjourned

A bail petition filed by R. Shaji, former Deputy Superintendent of Police and accused in the Praveen murder case, was adjourned to enable the prosecutor to get instructions. The Kottayam District Court and Magistrate court had earlier dismissed his bail petitions.

Acquittal

A Bench comprising Justice J.B. Koshy and Justice M. Sasidharan Nambiar today set aside the life imprisonment awarded by the Kozhikode Sessions Judge to eight CPI (M) workers in Vanimel for murdering Bhaskaran, Secretary, BJP Nadapuram Assembly Committee. The Bench, however, confirmed the life sentence awarded to the 10th accused, Purushu, alias Purushothaman. The murder took place on June 29, 1997.
