Khammam
By Our Staff Reporter
KHAMMAM, APRIL 7. Led by the Telugu Desam Party leaders, farmers staged a protest by burning chilli stocks in the agriculture marketyard today for remunerative price. The Telugu Desam Party leaders Dayakar Rao, Narender Reddy and Tummala Nageswar Rao who joined the protest, denounced the Government's attitude towards the chilli farmers in the State. They demanded that the Chief Minister introduce market intervention methods for the farmers. About 80 per cent of the arrivals to the Khammam marketyard were of Tejaswini variety. But the market conditions forced the farmers to sell their stocks for a song. The arrivals would be in the order of about 5 lakh quintals. The TDP leaders interacted with the marketyard officials and asked them to see to it that the farmers were not exploited in any way.
Stir threat
Later, addressing a news conference, Mr. Dayakar Rao said that the chilli farmers' problems would be taken up in the Praja Patham programme. He said that the Government, which claimed to be pro-farmer, should prove it self to be so. If the Government failed to respond to the farmers' plea, the TDP would launch stir, he said. TDP leaders Potla Nageswar Rao, S. Venkata Veeraiah and Balasani Lakshminarayana took part.
