CHENNAI, APRIL 7. Health camps and medical education programmes on maternal and child health marked the World Health Day in the city on Thursday. The day was observed on the theme, `Every mother and child counts.' MEDINDIA Hospitals organised a Hepatitis B screening and vaccination camp for young mothers and pregnant women. The camp aimed at identifying mothers who are Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (Hbs Ag) carriers. Children of carrier mothers have to be vaccinated immediately after birth. The number of carriers in India is estimated to be over 40 million. The country has an intermediate endimicity of Hepatitis B, with HbsAg prevalence estimated between 2 and 10 per cent. Estimates also indicate that annually, over 100,000 Indians die due to illness related with Hepatitis B virus infection. Padmapriya Hospital organised a discussion on minimal access surgery. Several organisations and clubs held various programmes. A colourful rangoli with a message that `Healthy mothers and children are the wealth of society' greeted those who went to the Central Railway station.
